When people say “that’s a bad part of town” they really mean “that’s a black part of town.”

My boyfriend lives in Old Louisville, which is a really beautiful, historic area in Louisville, KY. When he first moved there all he ever heard was that it was actually pretty rough. We have taken many late-night walks around his neighborhood, observing the gorgeous Victorians. We have always been so baffled as to why people say it’s such a rough area when we feel perfectly safe walking around there at night. Then the other day we came to realize that the reason people say it is a bad part of town is that there are black people there who may even have the nerve to walk down sidewalks. So what they really mean by “that’s a bad part of town” is “that’s a black part of town.”
